Driving in Seattle: What to know

Seattle is home to an estimated 816,600 people, a 34% increase since 2010. This means roads can be busy and parking can be difficult.

The Seattle Department of Transportation aims to have two parking spaces available on each block throughout the day. Prices range anywhere from $1 to $8 per hour, depending on the time of day and location of the parking space.

Summer is peak tourist season, and millions of people visit the downtown area each year, contributing to heavy traffic. In fact, Seattle ranked No. 10 in the nation for traffic congestion in 2025, according to INRIX.[1]

While Seattle doesn’t see as much snow as other major U.S. cities, winter weather can create hazardous driving conditions. There aren’t enough trucks to plow all of Seattle’s streets, and some streets are too steep for the city to keep open during winter weather.

In addition to traffic and weather challenges, Washington state also has one of the highest uninsured driver rates in the country. The state ranks 10th, with approximately 19.1% of drivers without insurance.[2]

As a result, if you’re in an accident with an uninsured driver in Seattle, you could be responsible for covering your own vehicle repair costs.

King County and the Seattle metro area have the highest vehicle theft rates in Washington state. In total, King County had 4,659 vehicle thefts in the first half of 2025 — a 39% decrease from the previous year but still high enough to rank No. 10 in the nation.

Drivers in areas with higher vehicle theft rates often pay more for car insurance than drivers in areas with lower theft risks.

Seattle car insurance rates vs. other Washington cities

Seattle is among the most expensive cities in Washington for car insurance. But nearby Tacoma’s rates are higher, at $111 per month for liability-only coverage and $211 per month for full coverage.

Other Washington cities, including Kennewick, Spokane, and Vancouver, have much lower average monthly rates, at $110, $115, and $133, respectively.

Car insurance in Seattle and Tacoma is more expensive than in smaller Washington cities because of their higher crime and vehicle theft rates. The Puget Sound region is also the most populous in Washington state, with more than 4.5 million residents in 2025.

The table below shows the cheapest car insurance rates in Seattle and several other Washington cities.

City

How traffic in Seattle affects car insurance rates

Seattle’s increasing population means more cars on the road and heavier traffic. In 2025, the average time to travel six miles was about 16 minutes, with average rush hour speeds of just 17.5 mph, according to the TomTom Traffic Index.[3]

Congestion is much higher between June and September, when tourists visit the city during school holidays.

Some of the busiest roads by volume in Seattle are:

  • First Avenue South Bridge (SR99)

  • West Seattle High Bridge

  • Mercer Street, west of Fairview Avenue North

  • Aurora Bridge

  • Spokane Street Viaduct, east of First Avenue South

The more traffic, the higher the risk of an accident. This can result in higher car insurance rates.

Cheapest state-minimum car insurance in Seattle, WA: State Farm

The average monthly cost for liability-only car insurance in Seattle is $104. Seattle’s liability rate is slightly higher than the Washington statewide averages of $95 per month.

Washington requires drivers to meet the following minimum liability coverage requirements:[4]

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury liability or death

  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability or death

  • $10,000 per accident for property damage liability

The following data shows the companies with the cheapest rates for liability-only car insurance in Seattle.

The average cost for a full-coverage car insurance policy in Seattle is $204 per month. That’s slightly less than in Tacoma, where drivers pay $211 per month, but more than the $148 monthly average in Spokane.

The increased risk of vehicle theft in Seattle can make a full-coverage policy a smart purchase. This type of policy includes comprehensive and collision coverage, which protects against car theft and offers peace of mind.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
